10 Cool Things to Do in Oregon This Summer
Many people think of Portland when talking about Oregon, but there’s so much more to this awesome state than its capital city. Portland is amazing and offers a taste of city life along with some fantastic restaurants, culture and bustling nightlife, but if you want to experience life outside the city, here are some cool things you can do all around the state.
Visit a Ghost Ship
The Peter Iredale is a beautiful shipwreck located on Oregon’s Pacific Coast. It crashed over a century ago, but the remains are still visible just outside of Warrenton.
Go Lake Jumping
Oregon is home to Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the United States. There’s a cliff on the edge of the 1,946-foot lake where you can jump in – and also get an incredible view of the surrounding scenery.
Climb the Dog Mountain Trail
If you’ve ever wanted to climb a mountain, the Dog Mountain Trail is a great place to start. It leads you all the way up the mountain on a calm, beginner’s trail that ends with some awesome views. If you’re more daring, try climbing Mount Jefferson.
Take a Goonies Tour
If you are a fan of The Goonies, head to Astoria to see the house where the main characters lived in their fictional childhood. A real family lives there now, and they love having tourists come to visit!
Drink the Best Beers on Earth
Oregon has loads of small-batch breweries; follow the Bend Ale Trail to taste their creations. Oregon is home to the most breweries per capita in the United States!
Visit the Vortex House of Mystery
Head to Gold Hill for an excellent roadside attraction called the Vortex House of Mystery. You’ll have to decide for yourself whether it’s an optical illusion or a paranormal work of art.
Taste Some Wine
While you’re at it, don’t forget to hit up the wine trail in the Willamette Valley. You can stroll through the vineyards and taste some of the region’s wonderful pinot noir.
Visit a Zen Garden
Portland is home to the biggest Japanese Zen garden outside of Japan. With its large variety of plants and rock gardens, it’s a wonderful place to visit all year round.
Sample Some Cheese
The Tillamook Cheese Factory is a popular Oregon destination. Take a self-guided tour and sample some of the cheese, ice cream and dozens of flavors of fudge made here.
Visit the Caves
The Sea Lion Caves are one of Oregon’s most beautiful sights. Located just north of Florence, you can wander around and see hundreds of sea lions basking in the sun or swimming all year round.
